Writing the Characters for Millie Bobby Brown's Netflix Film - Part 3
Annotated Pages from DAMSEL: Lady Bayford is Not Who She First Seems to Be (She's played by Angela Bassett in the movie)
Hello, lovelies!
The new movie trailer for Damsel just dropped and I am FREAKING OUT:
We’re just a little over 3 weeks away from the March 8th release date! So to get you even more excited, I’ve got another exclusive, newsletter-only behind-the-scenes look for you today: more annotated pages from Damsel the novel, with my notes on why I wrote what I wrote.
Today I have Lady Lucinda Bayford (played by Angela Bassett in the Netflix movie). Lucinda is Elodie’s stepmother.
We initially meet Lucinda earlier in the book, in a chapter from Elodie’s point of view. So our first impression of Lucinda is… well, what her stepdaughter thinks of her.
Just like how kids—even fully grown adult kids—often don’t understand their parents, Elodie might have a skewed perspective of Lucinda.
This chapter is the reader’s first chance to see the world through Lucinda’s point of view. But even then, she’s sending mixed signals…
Why? I explain more in the annotated pages below. Enjoy!
