I ADORED Broken Country--and what is so interesting to me is what Clare said about novels that inspired her BECAUSE, as I was reading Broken Country, I kept thinking that no book had captured me in quite the same way since Atonement! (Which was a masterpiece of a book.) Broken Country is also a masterpiece of book--a story that might have collapsed under its own weight had it not been for Clare's deft, literary hand. Fantastic interview.
Interesting, the setting and characters' names in Clare's book called to mind Thomas Hardy's 'Far From the Madding Crowd' with its seemingly idyllic, but also harsh, farming community in England – and the relationships between Bathsheba, sheep farmer Gabriel, and Sgt. Frank Troy.
